Those Two Magical Words . . .

SNOW DAY!

If you grew up anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line, you are probably quite familiar with the magic of those words: Snow day! A day of reprieve. A day of rest. A day of lounging. A day to finish any homework you hadn't quite finished (but were supposed to have--okay that's a PA Dutch phrase for you).

I would wake up those magical mornings and turn on the radio, delaying getting ready for the day, lest my efforts were wasted. I would listen as the DJ went through "The List." I went to an "M" school, so I had to wait for schools like Antietam, Boyertown, and Daniel Boone. The wait was interminable, but eventually the DJ would get to Muhlenberg. Only, if truth be told, Muhlenberg was usually skipped. I actually spent most of those mornings cursing the fact that 1) I lived in the suburbs and not out in the country, like most of the rest of the county, and 2) my school district shared a vo-tech with the city school district, so whereas they really never cancelled, we didn't either.

But occasionally fortune would smile upon me and I would get that snow day!

As I grew older and wiser (you know, a junior or senior in high school), I really grew to cherish the two-hour-delay. We would have shorter classes, I still got to sleep in, but we didn't have to make the day up later! About a good a compromise as you can get where school is concerned.

So this morning I had to chuckle a little as my eyes popped open at 5:50 and my first thoughts were to roll over, turn on my laptop and look up to see whether or not Josh was going to have school today or not. We'd had a "big" snow last night, so I was sure something was going to happen.

I was a little relieved that there was only a two-hour-delay! The day wouldn't need to be made up and I would get to still send Josh to school. That day of reprieve, as it turns out, is only for the kids. Ugh!
