Just Hanging Around

I've always been fascinated by sneakers hanging from telephone wires. I don't know why. I would see them whenever we went to my grandmother's house in the city. Red. Blue. White-turned-gray. Shoelaces tied in knots, the shoes dangling like a pendant from the city's telephone-wire necklace.

I would see them in the Bronx. In Philly. Wherever too many people lived in too little space. My mind would race--searching for an explanation to this urban phenomenon.

I don't have any answers. And maybe, someday, a social psychologist will conduct some expensive study to determine the cause.

Until then, I'll continue to let my mind be fascinated by this symbol of my childhood. My wonders. My fascination with the unexplained.
