Buttermilk Pie and Fried Pickles

No, I'm not pregnant. I went to lunch with my Texas friend today. We went to Lucy's in Celina, Texas, population: about the size of a large high school. I've been there several times before and LOVE their food. Today, however was the first day I tried the aforementioned items.

C: "I think I'm going to have to get some fried pickles."
Me: (strange, quizzical look like I'm figuring out if I'm in an episode of Twilight Zone . . .) "Okay??"
C: "Will you try some?"
Me: (thinking that she was my ride there and might not take me the 15+ miles back home if I don't accept say . . .) "Sure"

The appetizer plate comes out. I pick one up confidently. I mean, after all, isn't the whole point of frying something so that you can eat something fried? I dip it in the ranch. I wouldn't say it's my new favorite food, but I definitely would eat it again.

I had Lucy's version of the "Philly cheesesteak." My gastrointestinal tract is relieved to see the "Philly" before the "cheesesteak." I had one horrid experience in Blythe once. I saw "steak sandwich" on the menu. I felt a little nostalgic for home that day, so I ordered one. Much to my chagrin a whole half cow was throw upon a bun. "Dad, they fed me half a cow." "Well, only Philly makes them the [real] way." I was never to be tricked again.

Kind of. Lucy decided that a Philly cheesesteak meant you take a hamburger patty and chop it up and then fry it on the grill. Not truly a Philly, but not a slab of cow either. The sauteed onions and peppers and tasty-for-not-being-in-the-NE roll made up for Lucy's blunder.

Fried pickles, cheesesteak, and onion rings are now trying to force their way out of my esophagus. But I insist on ordering a piece of pie. After all, Lucy's makes the best pies and I am a pie fiend. Today I opted for the buttermilk. This was only after my friend explained what it was and assured me that I would, indeed, live after trying it.

All I can say is YUM to the max (a little '80's throw back here). You can't mock before you try it. The perfect end to a great lunch!

So, please come visit us. We'd love to take you to Lucy's. (I promise I won't make you order the fried pickles . . . unless you want to.) :)
